This pillow was so fun to make! I love scrap bag projects... The patchwork top was pieced into a square shape and then quilted onto plain cotton square of the same size. The top-stitching is a gridded pattern that runs through the fabrics and also runs 'in the ditch' thanks to the random placement of the patches.
Even though the pillow case is a square, the pillow as a whole is a rectangular shape because of the way the back is constructed... 2 pieces of fabric *overlap* one another enough to easily insert the pillow form and keep it in the case without the need for a bulky, uncomfortable zipper. As a result, the pillow casing has more give in one direction and is tighter in the other; hence rectangular.
Any 17" pillow form from the store will fit perfectly, so if you want to replace the one provided with perhaps another kind of pillow, such as goose down or hypoallergenic, that'd be no problem.

This pillow set has a store-brought, 17" polyester form and a handmade case that is 16" across. The case is smaller than the form in order to help it keep the pillow full and cushy. It also eliminates the sag of a too-big casing.
All the fabric used is cotton and a lot of the material is over-edged to prevent fraying (in addition to the quilting which also provides additional strength). Also, all the seams are double-stitched to help ensure longevity. The casing is made to be machine washed and dryed and is in very good condition!
Enjoy!
