*~*~*

The week I spent creating this dress was one that was to say the least, a pinnacle of sorts. The process became such a healing process for me, and the results turned out soooo beautifully! Usually, I'm so quick to go for earth tones when I dive into my scrap bag and then meditate, waiting for inspiration to strike and guide me towards my next project. This time however, I just wasn't feeling any colors... I was feeling grey and black and white though, so I decided to take the chance of making a darker piece.

Initially, the calico I based the corduroy patches around was to be a black background, rust and grey speckled print.... the same one used in the Black Apron Top. But even that had too much color. I hit up the fabric shop (where I happen to work :) and found what you see here now... the marbled pale-yellow and grey lava-like print with the strong black splashes. Clearly this fabric was the best to represent the turmoil within me when I started the dress!

So the healing began... Sewing and combining colors is such a therapy for me, and it thrills me to know it creates beauty out there amongst the lives of others. Sometimes they may be feeling the same, sometimes 180o differently, however always profoundly.

All the random corduroy patches are varied shades of grey and widths of wale. There is one cotton print that is easily seen in the last photo of a diagonal grid design (very subtle and a nice accent). The coolest thing about this dress, I think, is the *reverse appliqué* pinwheels, again noticeable in the last pic. For those of you not familiar with reverse appliqué, instead of adding a piece of fabric on top of another, a shape is cut out and a fabric swatch is placed behind the shape that was cut out! Personally, I haven't seen this technique used before much with hippie patchwork, so I'm really excited about it!

The open back is *very* open, and it important to note that the drawstring cinch along the lower back sits LOW, and that the loops where the adjustable straps pass through are quite high. I am thinking of altering this so that they are a little lower... this would create an effect similar to a dart and would lessen the extra slack in the bodice on the sides. I'll be sure to add pictures if I change anything.

Most of the fabric is over-edged to prevent fraying and all the seams are double-stitched. Most of the corduroy is recycled from clothing, but the cotton is all new. The upper part of the dress is fully lined for comfort. There is one deep pocket, semi-hidden, great for bringing along with you essentials wherever you may be! I haven't worn the dress yet, but I AM planning on it, so grab it fast! The fitting is best on someone with a small to medium build, and also at least 5'6" (or someone with a long torso). The dress can be lengthened for *free*.
